I also heard it reported that his job (shrink) was in high demand in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that once he got detached from Walter Reed, it up'd the chances he'd be sent.

It's different with medical personnel Cowboy. Promotions come easily, indeed almost automatically, to medical personnel. Because of their demand, skills, and long committments, to pay back the service for their free education, my understanding is they would have to go out of their way not to be promoted. In the Navy, many of the doctors were relatively high ranking; our senior medical officer was a Captain!

I'm not sure how it works in the army, but I assume that medical officers are sent as part of a medical unit that is attached to a larger force organization; for instance, 1 complete field medical unit might serve several divisions. Alternatively, a few select medical officers may be "detached" from that group and be assigned to an individual smaller formation. In the Navy, each capital ship had it's own medical department.

And while one certainly can be assigned to an undesireable duty station as a result of poor performance, the military doesn't usually send screw-ups into combat to endanger the lives of others. In Major Hasan's case, he lost his cushy position at Walter Reed as a result of the bad performance review. His going to the front was probably just part of his reassignment to III corps, the organizational formation whose headquarters is at Fort Hood...

I mean, it's not a German WWII movie where people are threatened with "Ze Russian Front!"; but I used to know some AF guys from Langley AFB who would joke about being reassigned to Greenland if the effed up...

Bob:

If you're reading this, or anyone else with knowledge of military stuff...

I've been hearing a recurring meme in the MSM that Hasan was being deployed soon to Iraq or Afghanistan. The implication being made is that the deployment was some sort of punishment for a poor review at Walter Reed, but that just doesn't sound right.

First, does the Army routinely punish individuals by sending them "to the front"? And second, isn't his deployment more likely to be the result of his UNIT being deployed, rather than just him?
