Give a dog a bone!
Apparently the Catholic League is up in arms about this. I can understand their perspective, too. It’s just that this usurpation and perversion of religious iconography is so hackneyed that it just doesn’t offend me anymore. It amuses me, in a cheesy, corny way.
I like puppies, and I’d rather get one from the pound or from a reputable breeder than from a pet store. What this image isn’t doing, though, is offending me or turning me off from meat or any of my baser animal instincts. I’m still having lamb for Christmas dinner, baby, but thanks for the memories.
This, on the other hand, is tres tragique!

It looks like she is stepping on one of the dogs.
I agree I find this more mildly amusing for its hackney nature and use of excessive airbrushing.
The cross as holy trinity covering is a bit offensive, but not offensive enough to warrant giving them the publicity they’re hoping for with this.
I hope you remembered to put “naked Joanna Crupa” in the tags.

I’m morally offended by her silicone-enhanced breasts.
Thou Shalt Not Get Fake Boobs!
I’m not a Catholic, but can I be offended, too? Take away that damned cross!
P.S. This is the one pic I can find of her in less than a minute in which she doesn’t look like a total skeezoid.
She would not be able to levitate without the fake boobs. She must be careful not to fart, lest she ricochet off the ceiling.
As I am not a Christian, I am not offended by the religious references. I am routinely amused by PETA – they are idiots and fools. This poster is so air-brushed/unrealistic, it is more of a cartoon than a picture. Sort of how I think about PETA….
And Dan, you are correct. Anyone considering getting a dog should either go to a pound/shelter, or go to a responsible breeder. If you want specific characteristics or a reasonable expectation of what the dog will be like, go to a breeder. If you like the idea of a surprise that unfolds as you go, go to the shelter. (And a word of caution to parents: if the dog is 6 months or older, and the shelter can’t or won’t tell you its history: PICK ANOTHER DOG!)
My wife wants a french bulldog. A cream colored one. There are not a lot of french bulldogs at the pound.
I will agree but only if we can give it a name of a famous Quebec hockey star (I am leaning Guy LaFleur right now but I am open to suggestions). Because french bulldogs look like hockey pucks and Quebec hockey stars generally have cool names.
heh heh. glad you used the “Sweet Horny Moses!”
“Certain religious groups have taken offense at this use of religious symbols, to which Krupa bites back: “We’re trying to spread the word that breeding isn’t the way to go. In my heart I know that Jesus would never condone the suffering that results when dogs and cats are allowed to breed.”

Wow. I hope she takes her own advice and avoids breeding, too. I’d hate to see the DNA passed along.
The use of the cross and other religious iconography is offensive and I should get far more upset about it than I do. However, this sort of blasphemous activity has become so pervasive that I am starting to tune it out. Like all other sinful activities, we become used to a little and slowly it becomes the norm. Eventually the basest activities cease to offend and we wallow in our own filth.
Do you find it interesting that the pornographic image that underlies the blasphemous image is barely mentioned except to comment on it in a lustful way? Pornography in the mainstream began as the pin up girl of the 40’s and has degenerated into billboards depicting group sex and bestiality. And that’s the mild stuff.
We should all become more aware of the absolute garbage that surrounds us and work to see it removed from the public square. It is harmful to society and thus, like crying fire in a Movie Theater, does not deserve the protection of free speech.
I know that Jesus would never condone the suffering that results when dogs and cats are allowed to breed
WTF? Is that woman that stupid? “Suffering” from being “allowed” to “breed”? We all know animals in the wild do all those things which bring them pain and suffering, like eating, sleeping, and breeding. Suffering for whom? The offspring? We could have the discussion about the “value” or the “goodness” of a life with suffering in it versus never being born in the first place – I don’t think she wants to go there. Except for puppy mills (which destine all of their output to pet stores – the WRONG place to get a dog or cat), puppies from breeders are meant to go loving homes. Suffering for these offspring are the result of accidents, or failure on the part of people. I could go on, but she is an imbecile.
And Tom, thanks for reminding me of the under-lying image of “pornography”. While I may enjoy looking at nude, or erotic images, I, like you, see no need for them to be on public display. Even if that cross were replaced with a non-descript object, I think the image would be inappropriate for public display.
San Pietro in Vicoli is a fascinating church, and like many others in Rome, is decorated with splendid works of are by some of the greatest masters of the rennaisance. I’ve enjoyed the good fortune of seeing this statue in person on one of my Roman holidays…
As for Ms. Krupa? I’ve not had the pleasure of seeing much of her at all, and although I consider myself a devout Catholic, can’t work up too much outrage over this PETA poster…
I mean, c’mon, these folks use Pammy Anderson as a “spokesperson”, and have put naked babes representing animals of course in cages here in NYC more times than I can count…
A *yawn* is all they get on this…
I have ceased to be surprised by the vacuity of the opinions of actors and models. These folks don’t get hired because of their Ph.D.’s in Economics.
So, in my typical cynical approach to the world, I’m never disappointed. I am, however, occasionally amused.
This falls into the occasionally amused category.
Joe:
Correct – not a lot of bulldogs at the pound, especially french bulldogs. That’s because people who want one know what they want, and are willing to deal with any side issues of the breed. Find a good breeder – if the breeder doesn’t vet you, they aren’t a serious breeder.
Guy LaFluer would be a good name.
What if it is a female? I am of the opinion that the name plays a small role in the development of the dog’s personality, via the expectations we perceive because the name. Choose well, young grasshopper.
Sorry for the OT, Dan – can’t help it when dogs are mentioned.
I’m Christian, study the Bible and go to church pretty much every Sunday. And I don’t much care for PETA. So I guess I am the sort that is supposed to be shocked and angry at this.
Not really. There is nothing particularly profane about it. Yeah, she’s nude and holding a (strategically) placed cross. Okay, they could be more modest when depicting an angel of God. The message is well intentioned I believe.
Now, let’s see PETA do that same ad with a model throwing open her burka while holding a star & crescent. Nope, didn’t think so…
“I will agree but only if we can give it a name of a famous Quebec hockey star”
How about “Punching Bag”?
And the ad SUCKS.
No Corgis.

PETA simply isn’t worth the bother.
