Negro-Gate

A couple of days ago, I tried to come to grips with why the census would retain a term liable to cause more offense than the good it would do. Caution: this video clip contains raaaaacism:

(via @stoo11 on Twitter)

Serendipitiously, I also posted a macaca moment that anticipated the revelations contained in the book, Game Change, regarding Clinton and Reid, not to mention John Edwards, who apparently freaked out on a campaign staffer for not having confronted him about screwing Rielle Hunter.

After swearing in Owens for NY-23 before the vote tally was certified, so that he could pitch in on health care (in violation of his promises on the campaign trail), the Democrats seem not at all concerned with suggestions that should Scott Brown win, his seating will be delayed. Not only that, but there is a movement afoot to scrap the filibuster, even as they plot to cede legislative powers to unelected appointee Sebelius.

I don't think I need remind you that the Massachusetts legislature changed the rules against a governor's appointment of a temporary replacement in Congress, promulgated at Ted Kennedy's request under Romney, in order to permit it again upon Kennedy's death, under a Democrat. Nor should I need to remind you of Burriss' appointment in Illinois.

In A Man for All Seasons, there is the following exchange:

Sir Thomas Moore: The law, Roper, the law. I know what’s legal not what’s right. And I’ll stick to what’s legal.

Roper: So now you’d give the Devil benefit of law!

More: Yes. What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?

Roper: I’d cut down every law in England to do that!

More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you – where would you hide, Roper, the laws being all flat? This country’s planted thick with laws from coast to coast – Man’s law, not God’s – and if you cut them down – and you’re just the man to do it – d’you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then?

Whatever form an American fascism might take, it will be myopic men such as these will make it possible.

Patterico has thoughts on Harry's hypocrisy.

  1. Why is everyone zeroing in on the word Negro and not on what I find to be the offensive part … “‘with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

Anyone close to my age is sure to remember how we were taught to use the correct term to describe those of African descent as Negro or Negroid. Those of the Negro race are Negroids, to use any other term, we were taught, was offensive, slang, insulting, low life, classless, etc, etc. Our housekeeper, a proud and caring woman, sat me down when I was 8 and told me, after overhearing me tell a friend that Carrie was colored (the most common term in usage then), that Carrie wasn’t “colored.” She made it clear to me in no uncertain terms that she was a Negress, of the Negro race and proud of it.

So, I think all this brouhaha over the word Negro in Reid’s remarks is over the top. The real terrible part, the part that indicates that Reid thinks Obama is nothing but a big phony, is the 2nd part, “…. Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” In other words, he could turn it on and off to suit his audience and make himself out to have “ghetto cred” he has never had. It used to be called “jive talk,” then it was “black power,” then it was Ebonics, then it devolved into “gangsta rap.” Would there be such an outcry of outrage if Reid had said, “he spoke with no gangsta rap dialect or no jive talk dialect” … unless he wanted to have one?

  2. Now would be a good time to point out the reality that Obama did turn his dialect, whatever you want to call that dialect, on and off. Why Obama felt the need to do that is still something that needs to be explained to me.

  3. Hi, Sara (pal2pal), remember me? I’m thor. I’ll take your first sentence as an example. Celine would have sincerely hated you. You’re no Celine. There’s no grammatical need to use a ellipsis in your first sentence nor are you entitled to its usage by merit of literary style. Do you not know proper grammar? What were you taught instead of proper grammar, dumwhiteybonics?

Just so we’re straight on your fronting your mad sklllz versus the lyrically truncated jive talkers.

That’s a cute story of your past Negress, but the “real terrible part” is your interpretation of certain of Reid’s words, “unless he wanted to have one,” as Reid declaratively implying President Obama never had “ghetto cred,” quoting your words.

Starting when you were eight until now, do/did you think it a Negress’s natural position in life to wash your stained panties while correcting your dated word usage, Colored or Negress? That’s how I liberally interpreted your crazed anecdote-laden interpretation of Reid’s words. See how that works?

For eight years President Obama served as state senator from Illinois’s 13th District, that’d be the South side of Chicago which, more often than not, is referred to as a ghetto, you pampered imbecile. Therefor if those ghetto people thinketh Obama ghetto-enough, maybe you should as well. Or is it that in your world of Coloreds and Negresses that you think it impossible that one from the lowly ghetto could be your better in English speech and grammar thus Obama, in your mind, is simply not from the ghetto even if reality dictates he is?

BTW, “black power” (again, quoting you) was never a syntactical lingua, it was a narrative. And from the black ghetto rose black power, and his name is Obama, the most powerful man in the free world, in no uncertain terms.

    • Yeah well notwithstanding your dismissive tone and argument, if you’ll recall, one of Obama’s problems early in his career was that he was percieved as not being “black” enough.

That’s why he started hangin’ wif dat racist Wright and his comrade in hate Louis Farrakhan. In fact, nationally he was still having trouble getting black votes, even in the south, until he dreamed up the mnasterful stroke to play the race card on Bill and Hill during the South Carolina promary. A gambit he, an most Obamists like yourself, engage in arbitrarily and capriciously; a tactic which will ultimately devalue the overall strategem.

All of you race card players are hypocrites and have been unmasked by Dingy Harry’s latest embarrassment. The Hypocrite-in-chief called for Lott’s head on a platter when he made a benign salutation at Strom Thurmands birthday party; but when Harry speaks inconvenient truths Obama as well as the usual race-baiters like Sharpton circle the wagons…

The sad fact is that Obama does take on phony speech affectations, like Al Gore does with his Jesse Jackson impersonation; he’s black when it’s convenient. And that is part of the underlying truth that unites all of the entities in the shadowy universe of lies surrounding Obama’s past.

None of it can see the light of day, because as long as it doesn’t he’s a liberal Democrat’s; a black man without a paper trail he needs to justify, who, at the slightest glimmer of political struggle, or even uncomfortable criticism, can fend off his opponents by a toss of the race card; or have his henchmen do it in his stead…

And here’s a clue, the hypocrite-in-chief is not as bright as you tried to cement as the official Obama public meta-narrative. He’s a friggin’ gaffe machine, who plays fast and loose with historical fact and citation; he’s like you thor-a man who’s battleship mouth continually get’s his rowboat ass into jams.

Up until now tha media has been carrying his water. But the effects of the BVD bomber dither-show, and subsequent solo of “I blame Booooooooosh!”, combined with the blatant lie about raising taxes and broadcasting the Obamacare conference bill crafting on CSPAN, has caused some cracks in the dykes, and it won’t be long before the flood of nutroot outrage flows when the turn on their demi-god…

I mean, the NY TImes has a story this weekend that essentially said he was a wimp like Carter…

It’s only a matter of time; be ready to defend your boy often in the coming year.

  6. Harry Reid is no more a racist than I am? WTF?

Now one of my sycophantic commentators wrote this:

I’m not sure it was a racist statement that he made.

Perhaps we should get Mitt or Rudy or Newt or Rush or Glenn to say the exact same thing and see what the reaction is before we determine whether it was a racist statement.

    Then, we would truly know.

This is getting me confused and upset. Robert Stacy McCain is a racist, but that means Harry Reid is a racist, and Obama is defending Harry Reid. I think my head is going to explode. When I get upset I want to eat. Now excuse me, I am heading back up to Tahoe for a little rest and relaxation. Boy am I hungry! I am going to take a big dump too, while I am at it.

He once – hahahhaaha! – made a living assigning exaggerated tags to his political opposites, but he’ya seem likey not to wear’n dis turd pie on’m he necktie.

  8. You know, Thor, you know nothing about me or my background. And you know nothing about Carrie. Carrie Daniels was her name. An exceptionally talented woman with more love in her than anyone I’ve known since. She was more my mother than my own career-oriented Mother and I loved her dearly. And during my elementary school years, I spent as much time at her home with her and her wonderful husband, Moses, as I did at my own. And when I started high school and her daily services as combo housekeeper/babysitter were no longer needed, my Mother helped her attain her lifelong dream of becoming a professional photographer with her own studio, where she had a successful career until she retired 30 years later and moved to Florida. And speaking of my Mother, with Carrie, they went together to march in Selma and Birmingham. They were invited guests of Coretta Scott King in Washington when MLK gave his I’ve Got a Dream speech. My Mother, who years before it became fashionable, was an outspoken voice for civil rights, starting the first G.S. troop for young black girls in 1948. And it was my Mother who convinced Carrie that her talents would be better used as Camp Director at the GS camp, than camp cook.

I’m sorry you are so offended by what we were taught as proper usage when I was a pre-teen, or by the preference of a wonderful woman, but that is the way it was. In the 1950s, the races weren’t divided up by special interest groups or phony p.c. designations, there were three … Mongoloid, Caucasoid, and Negroid.

Oh, and Thor, my adopted son, hates being called African-American. He considers it an insult since his American ancestry dates back to pre-Revolution days and includes heroes in all walks of life over the centuries and never a slave among them that he could find in his research. He’ll be the first to tell you that he is a proud American, period!

And from the black ghetto rose black power, and his name is Obama

Uh huh. The ghetto of private schools and Ivy League universities. Real street cred there.

Fuck you, if he’s an African-American and can’t figure out that the extreme majority of African-American were slaves in those pre-revolution days then he’s autistic as well as African-American, if I may be so blunt!

America is a racist county defined by its racist past. Get over it, heroine of Africa!

Maybe if we moved the discussion from what the hell has America learned from its racist past versus the denial of its racist past we’d be better served.

You are sooooo living in the past; get over it, and get over your over-inflated sense of the validity and value of your opinions.

If you’re life has induced the typical white guilt, so that you feel you must repeat this pablum whenever possible, then do so sotto voce and leave it at that. It doesn’t make you any “edgier”, “enlightened”, or KKKool; it makes you sound like an imbicile. Especially in view of Obama’s election; not to mention the ability of professional race-peddling shakedown artists to make a cottage industry off of exploiting that white guilt.

Get this, whitey-you’re a white boy who’s daddy is rich. No matter how many times you buy a round for the brothers at the bar, or if you wring your hands chapped over the “sins of the past”, you’ll still be a white boy who’s daddy is rich; and not some edgey, revolutionary warrior-poet like you tell all of the pierced-nez baristas when you want to be somebody.

  9. As the vid presents, the reconstruction era KKK was not Republican. But it also only lasted about 5 years before it was disbanded. The re-invented KKK of the 1920s, which was emulating the Masons as a fraternal organization had millions of members and elected senators before it got the rep as a terrorist group. That version featured support for both selected Republicans and Democrats. The main criteria for support at that time being who was not catering to immigrant Catholics.

The re-reinvention of the KKK in the 60s also tended to be non partison as far as parties were concerned, but in the end it was more oriented towards the Republicans as represented by David Duke et al.

  10. “The revelation of Senator Harry Reid’s comments referencing “negro talk” is just indicative of the true sentiment elitist liberals, and indeed the Democratic party, have toward black Americans. The history of the Democrat party is one of slavery, secession, segregation, and now socialism. It is this new aged socialism born from the Johnson Great Society programs that have castigated blacks as victims needing government dependency. One need only to look upon the city of Detroit to ascertain what liberal social welfare policies have produced for the inner city…..the new plantation for black Americans.

“The Ku Klux Klan was birthed by the Democrats as a terrorist wing to intimidate blacks, and whites, who sought to promote economic and education independence and social justice for blacks. What was once overt has just morphed and become covert, yet still exists..

    [...]

“Senator Harry Reid’s comments are disgusting, despicable, and unacceptable. They are representative of how intellectual elite liberals do indeed speak of black Americans in their closed private spaces. Next week I have been invited to NYC to address the Hudson Institute, a conservative organization, conference on “Reclaiming American Liberty”. That invite came to me because I took advantage of the opportunities this great Republic offered. I followed the guidance of my parents and set my standards above all others around me. I speak well and have impeccable communicative skills because my Father and Mother prioritized that quality.

“I shiver to think what my future could have been if I listened to the insidious rhetoric of charlatans such as Harry Reid, and the ambassadors of affirmative action who reside in the Congressional Black Caucus.

“Sure, the “stuck on stupid” blacks are going to address me in derogatory names, but I possess something which they lack; Honor, Integrity, and Character. To them I say, continue to be slaves to the liberals for your vote…….and in a year you will be calling me Congressman West.”
