Breaking: House Democrats defy Obama and table the tax compromise bill

Respect my authoritah!
So is this standard DC kabuki fare, or something much more foreboding:
Defying President Obama, House Democrats voted Thursday not to bring up the tax package that he negotiated with Republicans in its current form.
"This message today is very simple: That in the form that it was negotiated, it is not acceptable to the House Democratic caucus. It's as simple as that," said Democratic Congressman Chris Van Hollen.
The vote comes a day after Vice President Biden made clear to House Democrats behind closed doors that the deal would unravel if any changes were made.
Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon said: "They said take it or leave it. We left it."
The conventional wisdom among economists is that this will definitely hurt the stock market since there will probably be a great deal of selling before the years end to avoid the increased tax burden on incomes, But more importantly, this will also ultimately hurt an already fragile economy. The American people have long considered this Obama's economy, so one must assume that any serious reversal of what is, at best, a tenuous recovery in progress will be blamed on Obama and the Democrats. As Jim Pethokoukis suggests this is slo-mo suicide for the Democratic party, since the voters will take out their frustrations over the progressives tanking the economy at the ballot box in 2012.
And the episode begs a larger question. Over the last two weeks, several high ranking Democrats, such as President Obama, Bob Menendez, and Chuck Schumer, have essentially called the Republicans gangsters, thugs, and terrorists for insisting that all the current tax rates be extended based on the notion that it's not a good idea to raise anyone's taxes during a weak post-recession recovery; which they contend is "holding all America hostage" for the sake of ideology. But based on the almost certain damage that raising taxes will have on any recovery in 2011, and rest assured it will since the lowest level tax rates will increase by a staggering 50%, and send the stock market lower almost immediately as well as the concomitant value of many people's 401k's, all to assuage their political egos or to include some earmarks for pet projects or "wish-list" items of legislation I ask you; who's "taking hostages" now? You know, for the sake of ideology...
And since the tax increases will disproportionately impact the lower and middle class more than the rich, who's really the champion of the "little man" ?
And could this be a case of theme generating another crisis that, of course, they won't let go to waste; are they esentially going Cloward-Piven on the US economy? Or is that too far into tin-foil-hat-conspiracy territory :)
What is your opinion, kind reader?
Nip It In The Bud!

Apparently, Barney Fife has moved to Idaho to accept the Sheriff's job in Bannock County. Sure, he changed his name, but who else would shoot himself in the hand with his own gun?
Now that we know who shot the sheriff, perhaps we can find out who shot the deputy.
It’s Taking Long Enough

I hardly consider "imminent" to be the right word, maybe it's just me. The good news: he's finally going to die. The bad news: it took 22 years.
Number Two Tool Calls for Separate Military Pay Scale
The funny thing is, I'm not sure he's smart enough to realize that's what he's saying here. Outgoing Majority Leader Hoyer is calling for the military to take the Obama pay freeze along with civilians. Now, one can certainly argue the merits of this proposal, and perhaps even come out on the side that the military should also take the freeze. But for crying out loud, Congressman, if you're going to do it, then do it. You can't do it half-assed and suggest that deployed troops can get their pay raise.
My guess is the federal government could find a way to make compliance with the two-tiered wage scale cost more than it saves. More importantly, I'd have more respect if you owned it. This is just political cowardice at its finest. Fortunately, voters are smarter than he thinks we are and will see this for the blatant political ploy that it is.
Alternate Headline: Hoyer Wants To Keep Cake After Eating It
What else would we expect, though? The One is doing the same thing with Health Care mandates.
Full disclosure: This debate would directly affect my income.
Elizabeth Edwards succumbs to cancer
Elizabeth Edwards has passed away after a long battle with cancer. The 61-year-old wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards died at home Tuesday afternoon with her family around her.
The news came after the Edwards family announced Monday that cancer had spread to her liver and doctors were recommending against further treatment.
Indeed, this seems breathtakingly quick on the heels of yesterday's announcements that she would undergo no further treatments for a disease that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy; which she was not. In fact I'm sure that on some level you might say that we both shared an antipathy for her husband...
She stoically showed a lot of class, and strength, both in weathering her disease and the very public embarrassment foisted upon her by John Edwards.
R.I.P. Elizabeth, now mercifully relieved of your earthly sufferings and concerns. May God speed you to His side, and grace your loved ones with all they need during this time of trial.
Pearl Harbor day 2010

As FDR said, "A date which will live in infamy". One which, in my humble opinion, we should never forget; much like the date that corresponds to this generation's eerily similar act of asymmetric warfare that we all suffered on September 11, 2001. Never forget the treachery, never cease to struggle until those responsible are dispatched, and never forget the victims of their aggressions.
R.I.P. all who perished, God bless all their survivors, and may He continue to bless the United States of America.
Where’s Dan Been?
Working. Well, that and being inconvenienced.
Enoch's company's often-collaborating company had a Big Job that they turned over to me. On the first night, the power went down. Then I found out last weekend that the couple who lived above us was splitting up and leaving. Amanda takes away the last of her stuff today, but has already shut down DSL. Yesterday, I emailed them a service form, but this morning when I called, I was informed that I needed to find a telephone and plug it into the jack to discover whether or not there's a dial tone.
Meanwhile, you can read my first post at Pundit League. Go over there and get a look, and say hello to some of the writers.
Oh, I forgot to mention that the relay box for my directionals went out. I'm going to the local junkyard to see whether they've got one. It wouldn't be that big a problem, but I'd have to have some other work done to get the inspection renewed, so . . .
Living on the edge. I'm a rebel. ;-P
Words Matter: Taxes
You may have noticed I preferred the use of the term "death tax" when I posted about estate taxes. Because it is a tax looking upon death as a taxable event.
Here's another term I prefer: "Bush tax rates". They were tax cuts 9.5-years ago, when they cut the Clinton tax rates down. I am tired of them being referred to as tax cuts now, as if the higher Clinton rates were the natural level of taxes. No, if the rates go back up to the old Clintonian levels that's a tax hike, not "letting tax cuts expire".
"Payroll tax". It's just an income tax like all the rest. Sure looks like a tax on income to me. And the worst part of it is that half of it is hidden from the person being taxed [unless you're self-employed]. I wish all federal taxes that are applied on one's paycheck were just rolled into one item, including any employer portion of that tax [ok, that part can be separate, to make the math easier to go from gross to net]. I hate hearing that half of people don't pay income taxes, as that's a lie -- every wage-earner over a certain amount is paying income taxes, but they're calling it payroll taxes. I hear there's a deal to temporarily cut those, but we will see what passes. Unlike continuing current tax rates, it would be a real tax cut.
Finally, the evil "tax refund". I prefer the term "you're-getting-your-own-money-back-because-you-overpaid-during-the-yeat-and-if-you're-happy-for-a-huge-refund-you're-a-real-idiot". Also, the only well-deserved boo hiss to Uncle Miltie for inventing tax withholding. To be fair, if he hadn't invented it, some other bureaucrat would have.

Contributor interrupts unexplained absence for shameless personal prayer request
Hi. I'm still working on Bush's book. The chapter by chapter posts are still in the works, but the timely manner part has gone out the window. I'm not a professional.
Lord of the Flies has started his meds, and I think they're doing some good without zombifying him. Drugs are so neat. I've been really preoccupied with this relocation thing I mentioned in my last overly personal post, and politics just seems so dumb the last few weeks. Also, Mr KT doesn't work for TSA, but... well... if this was DC he would attend the same cocktail parties as TSA, so I've figured I shouldn't post about that.
Anyway, we turned in our paperwork for that compassionate transfer thing I referenced in reference to the relocation thing today, so we would really appreciate prayers that the complete stranger that hold my future and general mental health in his hands would have a softened heart per our request would be very coveted right now. (In other words, if I don't get closer to home where I can get some damn help I'm gonna f***ing snap) Also, if this happens and we move into the house across the street from my mom's then Mr. KT has called dibs on the extra room for his office, thus I will get a laptop and be able to blog more. So, as you can see, a prayer for me is a prayer for liberty. (Too much?)
P.S. I like Meep's new avy.
P.P.S. My personal blog and twitter are temporarily private per Mr KT's employment issues. Don't hate me, people that hate that!
