Oilent Green, or America Runs on High Octane Body Odor
In response to my post on the spot of bother experienced by Ace of Spades when bureaucrats in Ohio (in the pay of Big Embalming) closed down the corpse liquefaction business in Columbus, Sarah W asked:
Well, you don’t want liquified hobo run-off in the county sewer system, now, do you?
And I said:
Heck, no. I want to use it in my car.
To which she replied:
Yay biofuel. They don’t call it oilent green for nuthin’.
Which is true.
So I asked Serr8d to come up with our business plan.

Reflections on Ferraro

I was 10 years old in 1984, and my memories of the campaign are from a liberal perspective. Growing up in a 2nd generation union family, we were at least third generation Democrats; so our support was 100% behind Mondale and Ferraro. I remember the big deal that was made about Ferraro being the first woman on a major party ticket, and I remember the bitter disappointmet I felt when they lost to Reagan. As far as I knew, Reagan was just a "Union Busting S.O.B." (a button my grandpa let me buy at a flea market that my mother promptly made me return said as much) with whom the Soviets would refuse to negotiate.
Remember, I was 10 and my Grandpa's word was golden to me. If he'd told me the earth was flat, I would have simply asked him where it stopped and made a note-to-self not to go there.
Grandpa died in 1992, and while he is the one person whom I've lost that I truly miss, I've since learned that, indeed, Reagan was a Union Busting S.O.B., and rightfully so. I've learned that his hard stance against the Soviets was instrumental in our Cold War victory.
All that aside, I developed a distinct respect for Ferraro in 2008, when she spent quite a bit of time pointing out the unfair treatment Hillary was getting from the pro-Obama liberal press. Liberal or not, right or not, the woman called it as she saw it; and credit is deserved for that. She also deserves credit for jumping off the liberal bandwagon and defending Palin when she could have easily made more friends and headlines by criticizing Palin as the only other woman to be on a major national ticket.
RIP Geraldine Ferraro.
Weekend Public Pensions and Public Finance Roundup 26March2011
It has been quite the week for me. So we've got a bit of backup on the pensions stories.
And like the family members that have been puking around here (yes, that's part of the "quite a week"), it's time to puke up these stories!
SOCIAL SECURITY
Possible Dem crack-up over whether entitlements need to be addressed in the short term? This should be interesting.
Charles Blahous notes that Reid's attitude of waiting for catastrophe means an almost-sure destruction of Social Security as it is currently understood.
Which I expect is going to happen anyway due to demographic reasons, but hey.
Speaking of being blind to demographic issues, someone at Daily Kos whining about Mark Warner being okay with raising the Social Security normal retirement age.
GENERAL PUBLIC PENSIONS AND UNIONS
You know who get pretty sweet pensions? Congresscritters. Must be nice to be able to vote for your own raises and retirement benefits. It's not even your money! And you can even enjoy it after the jerks throw you out of office! Whee!
Coverage of the same from leftie site firedoglake -- and you know what? They're right.
Congress shouldn't get pensions at all.
That make you happy, FDL?
The Great Recession exposed the true cost of public employee benefits.
Wikipension is a wiki on public pensions run by NASRA. So, you know, caveat lector.
John Bury asks if those who are pointing out the unfundedness and unsustainability of public pensions are really attacking public employees, or if the people who are puffing on pipe dreams that things are okay are the ones undermining the stability of these pensions (oooh, NASRA is on his list). Hmmm. Related: what's 15% of $0?
For the nth time, looking at the impact of the discount rate on the valuation of public pension liabilities. And the WSJ about the tension between the actuaries who say "Hey, guys, you might need to lower that rate" and the people who would rather not have to put up more money for the promises they're making.
Meredith Whitney walked back her prediction of mass muni bond defaults, and Charles Gasparino gets his panties into a bunch. More on munis.
CALIFORNIA
Basic Q&A on Calstrs, the teachers pension plan in California.
Reaction to the Calpers asset-side corruption continues with proposed gifting rules.
Want a good horror story? How about a San Fran retirement benefit study? Sorry if you have trouble sleeping after that.
Reminder: Calpers decided it didn't need to change anything about its asset return assumption. More on same, also noting that Calstrs is using the same assumption... which it had shaved down from 8%.
Someone in California is on board with my idea of no pensions for pols. Oh, that "someone" is an Assemblyman? Awesome.
Other GOP pension reform proposals in California (with notes on where Gov. Jerry Brown disagrees/agrees....) And more on the GOP filing.
California municipalities don't have a fun time ahead of them, pension cost-wise. Of course, one easy way to deal with it (some of it) is just firing people.
Trying to use pension issues to political gain, for both Dems and Repubs.
Political low-hanging fruit: capping pension benefits. Other low-hanging fruit -- cutting pensions of felons.
The Progressive point of view on California pensions -- not surprising at all.
San Diego talks on pensions not going too well... actually, not going at all.
COLORADO
Denver City Councilmembers think it's a great time for a raise!
FLORIDA
Raising retirement ages for Florida employees. And for Florida employees to contribute more to their pensions.
Part of the pensions battle is the ginning up of class warfare... but not bankers v the "little guy" - but who the big $$ pensioners are. Here's a slice looking at 4 particular people in Manatee County. More on those 6-figure pensions.
The theme of high valuation rates comes up again and again. This one specific for Florida. Thing is, even with these high assumptions, many funds are still in deep trouble.
ILLINOIS
Understatement of the year: Illinois pension crisis eludes easy solutions. Easy to explain -- they've already tried all the easy solutions. They've come up dry. Actually paying for what benefits cost when you bestow them upon employees never seems to have occurred to anybody.
Cook County board president says public employees are going to have to share in financial sacrifices. Good luck with that.
A collection of links to arguments as to whether the pension benefits of current employees can be altered under the current Illinois constitution.
State teachers fund doing really, really poorly. That's one to watch - it's going to get really ugly.
MARYLAND
Maryland workers weren't happy with the governor's proposed pension plan.
Maryland House adjusted governor's proposed plan.
MASSACHUSETTS
People really are stuck on that special $100K pension mark, aren't they?
MICHIGAN
Not a purely pension thing, but it is related. Michigan schools are seeing existence-destroying deficits in front of them. Some population flight (at least some incredible ones from Detroit), as noted in the 2010 Census numbers, may be related.
Here's the deal -- some of the reasonableness of methods of funding and valuing public pensions counts on governments not going out of business... and having a limitless power to tax. That's called into question when you remember that people can leave, in a variety of ways (including the way we all leave -- death. That's why I keep coming back to demographics.)
You can only tax people. A bit difficult to tax the abandoned buildings, when no humans are involved.
But they're trying this pension tax thing. So that will drive away the few people left (who are left only because they can't sell their houses). No, they're not happy about it.
NEW HAMPSHIRE
Pension reform to include higher employee contributions in NH.
NEW JERSEY
Back to John Bury on trying to explain the state of NJ pensions.
NEW MEXICO
Legislation to make minimum retirement age for NM employees the scary high level of....55.
OHIO
Cincinnati city council not having much fun wrangling with pension issues.
A good explanation of the deal with having different amortization horizons.
RHODE ISLAND
Trying to yank pensions from crooked officials. Good luck with that, when said crooked pols vote on their own benefits. I prefer my idea of no pensions for pols at all.
Trying to let retired RI employees to return to work. Yeah, double-dipping is so popular elsewhere. I'm sure this will be popular in RI, too.
VIRGINIA
The public employees don't have to be unionized to cause financial difficulties for a state.
CANADA
Crooked pol resigns, keeps his pension. Ain't that the way.
Quebec tries its hand at pension reform.
EUROPE
Noting that one of the PIIGS has its own test of public finances. I doubt this will play out better in Portugal than it has in Greece.
It's already been getting ugly in England.
UK university staff strike over pension reforms.
OECD report on needing to raise retirement ages.
University of Wisconsin Professor Cronon Re-emerges at TPM
Self-proclaimed moderate Professor William Cro-Magnon, who compared Scott Walker in the strictly delimited sense to leftist bete noire Joe McCarthy in terms of bad psychological disposition in the pages of the NYT, is shocked that anyone could have taken offense at his "well-reasoned" exposition.
[WI GOP spokesman] Jefferson's statement also said: "Finally, I find it appalling that Professor Cronin (sic) seems to have plenty of time to round up reporters from around the nation to push the Republican Party of Wisconsin into explaining its motives behind a lawful open records request, but has apparently not found time to provide any of the requested information."We e-mailed Cronon for a response to that statement, and here is what he told us:
"I had naively hoped that the Republican Party might be receptive to a moderate, fair-minded, well-reasoned appeal on my part. I think we all have an interest in trying to balance freedom of information versus intellectual freedom of inquiry -- to say nothing of coercive state power versus liberty and privacy, values that I've always thought I could count on the Republican Party to defend. So they're not the only ones who are shocked by this exchange. I had honestly hoped for a more thoughtful response from them. I'm surprised to discover that they think all university professors are "government officials" -- and I also wish they could have spelled my name correctly."
And for the record, this correspondence was done through Cronon's personal e-mail account.
Late Update: Cronon has posted a further response on his blog. Key quote:
I have to say I'm at least as shocked as they say they are, but I'm rapidly gaining an unhappy education about what hardball politics in the United States now looks like.
I worried for a while that my New York Times op-ed on "Wisconsin's Radical Break" might have gone too far in drawing a carefully limited parallel between the current tactics of the Republican Party in Wisconsin and those of Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s...but since the Republican Party seems intent on offering evidence to support that comparison, I guess I should just let their words and actions speak for themselves.
See? Professor Cronenberg's article was moderate, fair minded and well-reasoned, if he does say so himself. Why, it's just outlandish the way Republicans have been carrying on in Madison. Civility NOW!!!!
I'm terribly sorry that Professor Crony's been so misrepresented. What do you want, wingnuts? That he should publish crononymously?
Marizela’s Been Missing for 3 Weeks
Her last confirmed sighting was on March 5, in the University District of Seattle. She is an 18-year-old freshman at the U of W, who was being treated for depression, a condition that's not uncommon at that age. Also not uncommon at that age are the first manifestations of schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.
Why? Well, as we develop, our brains create a wide variety of models of the way things are, expressed by clusters of afferent pathways. At this age, there begins a rather brutal cutting back or pruning of these models, leaving (it is to be hoped) the ones that are most "worldly" to continue to develop and function. Naturally, such a delicate and complex process sometimes has its hiccups, as it did with me at that age, and very possibly has done with Michelle Malkin's cousin.
Speaking from personal experience, I can say that someone in the throes of depression, especially the first time, has lost perspective. They often torture themselves by meta-perseveration, obsessing over their obsessing over their inability to think straight. In that deep, dark hole, it's very difficult to imagine that you will ever emerge. As for myself, I actually cannot remember much of my freshman year in college.
You cannot bootstrap yourself up from such a condition by sheer force of will. Obviously, your judgment is impaired. And the greatest danger is that a person afflicted in this way will seek a permanent solution to what really is a temporary problem.
As for me, I am praying to the Blessed Virgin to help bring Marizela back to her senses and her family and friends. It's natural that, feeling like a pile of broken glass, one does not want to inflict her pain on those people, but there is no one who is not lovable in God's eyes, whatever they may think of themselves.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me, Amen.
Marizela's friend Brianna Price went to school with her in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Brianna teamed up with Elizabeth (Beth) Janansky and Lydia Chong to make and sell bracelets to support the search for Marizela. They are orange "for Marizela's favorite color" and include the Tagalog phrase from her tattoo -- "lahat ay magiging maayos." ("All will be well" or "Everything's going to be okay.")
Brianna writes that Marizela's South Jersey friends will also be holding a fund-raising event on April 8 at Egg Harbor Township High School's lower cafeteria where the bracelets will be sold:
"I am working alongside the Egg Harbor Township High School's Drama Club/Thespians Honor Society, Key Club, Art Club, Latin Club, Choir, Dance, and many teachers and graduates to put together a Coffee House performance night. This event is on Friday, April 8th. Doors open at 7:30. Admission is $5.00 and we will be selling wristbands there as well. The link to the event page on facebook is http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=306349&id=613401648&saved#!/event.php?eid=203738876322949."

[Update] Looking for the truth: James Cruckson and the FDL shooting
Updates posted in red.
I want to start by letting everyone know that today (March 26, 2011) is not only Officer Craig Birkholz' memorial in Kenosha, but it is also the date of the funeral for James M. Cruckson. Both of these men were killed in a tragedy that as of yet, has no good explanation. But that is why we are here; though we may not have all the facts, through discussion we may be able to discover what really happened that morning. If you are here, you probably believe that you're not going to get the truth from the Fond du Lac Reporter or other news media. So, let's do what the internet was made for: share information. Hopefully our answers will bring some kind of peace to the family of James, who from all accounts cannot believe that the man they have known all their lives as a good man, son, and father is gone under such circumstances.
I want to make a side note. In the previous thread, there was a lot of discussion about James' girlfriend, Josie Warner, who also allegedly reported him for sexual assault. While I understand that bashing her and making her out to be the ultimate bad guy probably feels great for those who understood their relationship and blame her for what happened, it does not help us solve the mystery at hand. That being said, this is an open discussion.
So without further delay, I'd like to get to the questions that we all have regarding the events of that morning. Most of them need someone to verify the facts. And some of them probably won't be answered until the state investigators finish their work (which takes months). But let's do what we can.
Thanks to all and may all who were affected by this tragedy find peace.
Questions about FDL police shooting
1) Reports that James Cruckson was telling people at the bar he was going to start shooting people at 6 AM
Status: myth
- debunked by friend (Steven Andrews)
“People snap from the war and everything. Anybody could snap at any time," Cruckson's friend and neighbor Steven Andrews said.
Andrews was with Cruckson the day before the shooting, and said contrary to reports that the gunman was at a bar planning the attack, he was actually at home working on his house. Relatives said Cruckson lost it when his girlfriend returned home in the middle of the night from a trip with another man, details Fond du Lac Police have not confirmed.
I’m calling this one a myth because the only report of it was by a woman who heard it from her son’s friends, which is hearsay and not very reliable.
(News coverage here) Note how the 14-year-old girl says that she heard shots at 5:30 AM.
2) Reports of shots fired at 6AM, before police arrived on scene?
Witnesses: Marty Neis, Diane Ollerman’s sister, and Dale Pierce (per FDL Reporter stories)
(anybody who lives over there want to clarify this?)
3) Police arrive at 6:30 to investigate sexual assault? Or because of reports of shots fired?
- Status: needs clarification
4) Josie Warner having an affair with Craig Birkholtz
- False....I think it's time to give this rumor a rest.
5) Josie Warner having an affair with a Fond du Lac Police Officer?
- Status: True to the best of our knowledge....confirmed by Jeffj
6) Josie Warner reported a sexual assault at 3:30 AM?
- Status: I believe this is false...the time was 5:30 AM (?)
7) Jim’s sister, brother, and ex-wife were in the home before police arrived.
- Status: myth, only his sister was there
- XOXO says:
Directly from the Cruckson family: he shot into the ceiling out of anger while his sister, brother, and ex-wife were in the house. Those were the shots the woman walking by heard. His brother and ex-wife left the house, leaving only his sister. This was BEFORE police had been called, after Josie left the house, and Jim was upset and called his family for support because he felt out of control.
BUT…hali (Jim’s cousin?) says:
"i am part of his family and this information is absolutely false. his sister got in AFTER the cops where there. funny isnt it. seriously youre making yourself look like an idiot i suppose your related to josie"
AND Areyouoneofthosetypesofwomen? Says:
"his sister was forced out. she made it in and tried to talk to her brother out of it and the FDL PD handcuffed her, told her to shut up and that they would shoot her themselves. He never shot at them, the FDL PD shot at him"
8) Was protocol followed?
- Status: needs clarification
Did the police enter legally?
9) A major point of contention is if the shots were fired before or after police got there.
10) Who let police into the house for them to get stuck in the basement?
According to TT, an officer's wife, they were given keys by Josie. That's not to say that they were allowed to enter the house.
11) Josie Warner allegedly reported the sexual assault. Did she tell officers that her daughter was in the house knowing that the girl was at a neighbors?
From everything we've heard, she knew her daughter was not there and deliberately told police she was.
12) In regards to this video, why is there silence while police pile into the SWAT car?
13) There was a rumor that Josie had her ex-husband put in jail for similar charges that she tried to bring on James and that he served 9 years. I believe that to be false. First of all, she would have been too young to be married 9 years ago, and secondly I can't find any evidence to support it. Josie's ex-husband (Timothy Mitchell Warner), has several court cases listed on wcca.wicourts.gov ; however, there is nothing to suggest that he was behind bars for a such a significant length of time. Josie did take out a restraining order on him in November 2007. In addition, this is his facebook page, with posts from 2010.
UPDATE: Timothy M. Warner says:
Well as you can see you have the right FB page and no I’m not in prison. I was in the Brig for 31 months in Great Lakes, IL and Camp Lejune, NC. I was convicted at a General Court Martial sentence to 5 years none of the charges had anything to do with anything sexual. Also unlike the civ. courts you can be found guilty by a majority vote in a GCM as I was. As of now 1 charge has been over turned and I’m still fighting the others. I am also talking with higher Marine Corps about being retained. I was married to Josie and she did they same to me as she did to him the only diffrence is when the cops came from me i went without a fight all 3 times. i believe JC was set up and we lost a great soldier and a 1 of the few good cops in FDL. hopefully the truth will come out and the familys can have there peace of mind…Feel free to contact me through facebook.
and Timothy M. Warner says:
2 of my arrests Josie picked a fight with me and we argued nothing physical then she would call the cops and tell them she was scared and i was a combat marine with PTSD, lots of guns and i was going to kill the cops when they got there and then myself. (sound familiar?) when the cops came they would come in force guns drawn and looking for a fight. I gave up without one. I cant say much not because im still fighting to get back in the Marines.
If anyone has any more questions, let me know and I will add them to the list. Also as I receive or find additional information, I will update so that we know exactly what we have and what we still need to find out.
Lenten Reflections of a Prodigal Son and his Brother
During Lent we are to be focused on reconciling ourselves to God. To contemplate in what ways we can become more like the Father. Inseparable from this is our instruction to live as the Christ demonstrated. He is indeed the Way. And His Way is that of complete sublimation to the Will of God. That is, His Way is all about reducing ourselves and opting instead to embrace our true vocational call: "ambassadors of Heaven."
Perhaps the most gripping of Christ's Teachings is the parable of the "Prodigal Son" - it is, as most of Jesus' Parables, one which deserves reading, re-reading, and contemplating, and praying over. Because what is at first obvious to the reader very much depends on the reader. It is the case that upon further consideration, dozens/hundreds of additional lessons are revealed. So that, as with all of Jesus' Teachings, the depth of Wisdom contained is impossible to plumb.
(Luke 15)
Then he said, "A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.' So the father divided the property between them.
After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.
When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need.
So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine.
And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any.
Coming to his senses he thought, 'How many of my father's hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger.
I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers."
'So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.'But his father ordered his servants, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.' Then the celebration began.
Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.
The servant said to him, 'Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'
He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him.He said to his father in reply, 'Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends.
But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.'He said to him, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.'"
So much to say... but in rough sketches, here are some things to consider/contemplate (I assure you none of these insights is original to me - rather, they come from Benedict XVI, Father Mark Mary (you can find his inspirational Homily from Today's Mass on EWTN here later on today), and authors too numerous to cite (or even remember)):
1) One of Benedict's takes (in his book Jesus of Nazareth) is that the Older Son represents the Faithful Jews. For many of them, Jesus' message (existence and identity) was, understandably, incredibly hard to digest. The Faithful Jews had for millennia kept the Law. Defended the Law. Died for the Law. While the pagans around them lived like animals completely ignorant of the Law, the Faithful Chosen People of God kept the Law of Moses. And then, from seemingly nowhere, an upstart Rabbi announces that even these most hardened sinners, the Pagans, were invited to become God's adopted sons! That in spite of squandering their lives in shameful ways, the Father would celebrate their return to His Household. With a feast no less!
2) Is the parable really about the so-called "Prodigal Son?" Of course it is. For many of us, we at first see ourselves as the younger son. We feel a deep sense of guilt for our transgressions. When we are Baptized we are made anew and dressed in white garments announcing a disposition towards Christ - of belonging to Christ. We put on, as it were, the garments of Christ. Many of us, upon reflection, find that we have gone very much far afield. That we have squandered our Inheritance. That we have lived as pigs. Nay, less dignified than pigs. A pig is a pig by nature. A pagan man who lives as a pig sets his inherent dignity aside. A Christian man who lives as a pig sets his inherent dignity and the Grace of Baptism aside. The Christian man who does so has truly "set off to a distant country where he squander[s] his inheritance on a life of dissipation." How profane a life I have lived. How far off that "distant country" is. To any who has not seen himself in this parable, it is impossible to explain why it continues to bring tears to worldly men of hardened hearts. St. Augustine's conversion of heart - described in his Confessions intimately explores a real-world example of how far a man will go to separate himself from his father. And what happens when he realizes what he has done in so doing.
3) But this parable is very much about the "Faithful Son" as well. In fact, the faithful may have been better served had it been known as the parable of the Faithful Son. How hard is this son's heart? His long-lost brother has returned. And yet, he is filled with envy and resentment. He sees his father's joy and cannot even bring himself to enter the lodge where the feast is being held. He has stayed while his brother has left. He has done his father's bidding. He has been loyal and responsible. And yet, no fatted calf has been slaughtered for him. Think of the depravity the older son reveals! His heart is laid bare so unable is he to comport himself. He counts his faithfulness as a burden. He wears his obligation to his father as a yoke.
4) Neither son understands the father. Beginning with the younger son. He does not understand how much the father desires him to return. Of his own volition! He sets the younger son's offenses aside so happy is he that his son has returned. He once again places the marks of sonship on his recovered child. Garments, rings, and a feast in his honor. He is reconciled to the father and the father is so thrilled he cannot contain himself. Yet the younger son expected the best outcome to be that of one of his father's servants. That is, he expect more than he deserves. In the father's reaction, we glimpse God's Mercy. The older son also exhibits his poor understanding of his father. He cannot believe his father would welcome back the "troubled" son with such fanfare. He doesn't understand how the father could set aside such intransigence. How can there be no punishment? It is, in the eyes of the older brother, completely and utterly unfair! He accuses his brother to the father, as if the father knows not that the younger son has "swallowed up [his] property with prostitutes". See how hardened his heart has become... "all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends." Wow! The truth is revealed. How dark his mind has become. How deep his envy and resentment. Even still, the father is merciful. Instead of expressing his disappointment in the older son's reaction, he chastises him gently, reminding him, "My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found."
My brothers and sisters: I urge you during this Lenten Season to contemplate how distant is the distance you have traveled from the Father. If you are anything like me, I see myself in both of these brothers. I know what I deserve, but for the Mercy of God. I know how much I do not know as it relates to the Mercy of the Father. A feast? For me? I am not worthy.
I will say it again for the benefit of all of my brothers and sisters in Christ. We are necessarily Hypocrites! We are to be Fools for Christ! The bar is necessarily high... and perfection will not be ours on this Pilgrim's Road. We will necessarily fall short. End up in the woods. We will be lured away from the path. We will fall in the mud, beaten and bloodied. We will be left for dead. We will be surprised when a strange Samaritan (of all things) picks us up and delivers us from our doom. We are in fact, all of us, in a distant country. We are, in fact, all of us, spending our inheritance on whores. During Lent, we are reminded to identify our faults, our imperfections, our rebellions, our sins, our darkened minds, our injured and hardened hearts... and to orient ourselves toward the Father's Estate.
If you are a Prodigal, say to Him when you arrive, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.'
He will have mercy and say, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.'
If you are an Obedient, go to your Father and say, "Father forgive me my envy! Forgive me for my hardened heart! I am not worthy to be a claimant to my Inheritance."
He will remind you, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.'
Then the celebration will begin.
Justice David Prosser’s Opponent, on Integrity
A ad against a Supreme Court justice and candidate has a sexual assault victim upset.
A new ad says Supreme Court Justice David Prosser refused to prosecute a sexual assault case. It refers to his time as Outagamie County District Attorney. The ad is paid for by the Greater Wisconsin committee.
"It is a smear ad," said Prosser, who is seeking re-election to the state's high court. "It is a disgraceful ad. And it is not true. It is going to be answered to the best of our ability. But I can assure people that the ad is one of the worst, most untruthful and misleading ads that has ever been run in a judicial campaign."
In 2004, Father John Feeney was convicted of abusing brothers Troy and Todd Merryfield more than 25 years earlier. The ad references a website where Todd Merryfield says he is misquoted.
Todd Merryfield issued a statement in response to the ad, saying he is upset to see his court case being used as a political tool against Prosser. Merryfield goes on to say he finds the ad to be offensive, inaccurate, and out of context. Merryfield says he hopes the Greater Wisconsin committee will remove the ad, and hopes Prosser's opponent, Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg will encourage the organization to pull it.

"I appreciate the concerns he has expressed," said Kloppenburg. "I have myself not seen the ad and I guess it's up to the voters to decide how they'll handle it. As I've said before, my campaign is focused on my message and on informing the voters based on my record and my approach to the job and that's how I want the voters to decide how they'll vote this election.
But as regards the other guy's record, whatever. Here's the ad, via Ben at Ace's sidebar.
Fortunately, students are never sexually assaulted by teachers in Wisconsin schools, who are subsequently protected by their unions.
You can visit the Greater Wisconsin Committee's website here, to see how they've always been focused on protecting children from sexual predators.

Katie Couric’s Replacement
I don't share the author's sense that CBS ruined Katie Couric, because I never respected her in the first place, but from a marketing point of view I think he's right:
According to Howard Kurtz, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric will not have her contract renewed and will be off-the-air come June. So goes the CBS News experiment of hiring a well like woman from morning television and trying to remake her into something that she is not for an evening news program. Even casual observers of television knew that taking Katie Couric from a three hour morning television show and putting her in a 30 minute show in the early evening hours would be a disaster. However, as they have done so many times before - the suits at a television network decided to ignore their market research and try something new anyway.
That's all water under the bridge and spilled milk and eggs that shouldn't have been concentrated in one basket, now, though. So the question is, how does CBS find a suitable replacement for Katie Couric?
I have some suggestions. Please feel free to add your own.
1) Potted plant
2) Aquarium full of colorful sea kittens
3) Yule log video
Any of these would be just as informative and pleasant to look at, and much less costly.
