Italy breaks ranks with NATO over Libya mission

Incroyable!
Which was inevitable I suppose, given their reluctance from the beginning. From AFP:
Italy called for a suspension of hostilities in Libya on Wednesday in the latest sign of dissent within NATO as the civilian death toll mounts and Moamer Kadhafi shows no signs of quitting power.
"We have seen the effects of the crisis and therefore also of NATO action not only in eastern and southwestern regions but also in Tripoli," Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told a parliamentary committee meeting.
"I believe an immediate humanitarian suspension of hostilities is required in order to create effective humanitarian corridors," while negotiations should also continue on a more formal ceasefire and peace talks, he said.
"I think it is legitimate to request ever more detailed information on the results" of the NATO mission, he added, condemning "the dramatic errors that hit civilians, which is clearly not an objective of the NATO mission."
Of course the French government immediately made a statement that amounted to "no dice":
Any pause in operations would risk allowing him to play for time and to reorganise(sic). In the end, it would be the civilian population that would suffer from the smallest sign of weakness on our behalf...
So in essence Sarkozy is telling the Italians to stick with it. David Cameron also pledged that Britain would continue the mission as long as necessary; despite the warnings of his top military officials of the strain that this is putting on the UK's armed forces.
All of this serves to underscore the position that the America's NATO partners have put themselves in over the years. They've relied on the US to defend their nations, in a macroscopic sense, and have robbed their individual defense budgets in order to fund the redistribution of wealth via their ever increasing welfare states; in many ways a preview of what would result if the Democrat national politicians were given free license to implement the Obama/progressive agenda.
NATO's inability to successfully prosecute Operation Unified Protector without the US providing the bulk of the combat forces illustrates the recklessness of this policy. And it is perhaps a harbinger of an increased US role, at least with respect to combat aircraft, in the near future.
Italy's reticence to continue prosecuting the shooting war in Libya will no doubt give cover to other NATO nations that wish to withdraw completely. And, should they restrict NATO forces from flying combat sorties from Italian bases, geographically the closest to Libyan territory, it will make things that much more difficult; and may jeopardize the ultimate success of the mission.

Drone Helicopter reported down in Libya

EADS Orka
According to the AP, NATO is reporting the loss of a rotary wing UAV over Libya Early today.
NATO said one of its unmanned drones disappeared over Libya on Tuesday, refuting reports that forces loyal to leader Moammar Gadhafi had shot down an alliance attack helicopter.
Libyan state television repeatedly broadcast images of what appeared to be aircraft wreckage, including shots of a red rotor and close-ups of markings in English.
It quoted an unnamed Libyan military official saying a NATO Apache attack helicopter crashed in Zlitan, about 85 miles (135 kilometers) east of the capital Tripoli. The report claimed it was the fifth Apache that had been downed - a charge NATO denied.
Wing Cmdr. Mike Bracken, an alliance spokesman, said NATO instead lost radar contact with an unmanned helicopter drone Tuesday morning along the coast in central Libya, and is investigating the incident. He said the drone was performing an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission.
Well, of course they "shot it down"; isn't that always the story? Didn't they claim to have "shot down" the F-15 that suffered mechanical failure at the start of this operation?
Now neither the AP article nor a post by a UK defense management journal blog specified the type of drone in question. There are several US rotary wing UAVs, and unmanned air operations are understood to be part of the unique capabilities the US provides as part of it's role in Operation Unified Protector. However, my intuition is that the aircraft in question is most likely an EADS Orka (pictured above). My reasoning for that is that it Orka's would be directly under control of British and French forces, as opposed to having to relay information and direction through the unified command; which, of course, would be possible but less likely in my humble opinion.
Regardless of which Helicopter UAV was shot down, or under what circumstances, I certainly hope that the wreckage was confirmed to be completely destroyed. And if it wasn't, that NATO forces bombed it to smithereens. Because I wouldn't want any of the technology involved to make it's way into the hands of our neer-peer adversaries in Russia, or even worse, China. I personally don't want a re-run of the incident in the Balkans in the 90's, when an F-117 Stealth FIghter was miraculously downed; and shipments of parts of that wreckage arrived in both Moscow and Beijing by weeks end.
Because K-Daffy could use some help right now, politically and logistically, and this could provide him a little bit of useful leverage with forces that have no aversion to seeing NATO's mission fail.
VDH on the metaphysics of contemporary theft
As usual, an excellent essay by Victor Davis Hanson over at Pajamas media, in which he uses some anecdotes of criminal behavior to illustrate how, as a nation, we are nearing a tipping point where those who are unjustly preyed upon will tire of the usurpation of the fruits of their labor and simply stop working to acquire the things that the thieves covet.
He sets the stage by relating three personal experiences, the theft of a chain saw, the vandalizing of irrigation pumps via theft of the electric lines that power them-simply to sell the copper in the wires for its scrap metal value!, and a neighbors home, vacant and for sale, that had all of the appliances stolen stolen from it's kitchen.
A majority would believe the thieves took things for drugs, excitement, or to buy things like an iPhone or DVD, rather than out of elemental need (e.g., the thief hawked the chainsaw to purchase the family’s rice allotment for the week). In this view, contemporary American crime arises not so much then from Dickensian poverty, as we see in South America or Africa, but out of a sense of resentment, of boredom, from a certain contempt for the more law-abiding and successful, or on the assurance that apprehension is unlikely, and punishment rarer still. After all, Hollywood, pop music, the court system, and the government itself sympathize with, even romanticize those forced to take a chainsaw, not the old middle-class bore who bought it.
I conclude that most Americans would agree that chain-sawing a peach tree or pumping irrigation water enriches the nation, while cruising around looking to destroy such activity does not. The latter represents the sort of social parasitism that I read about each Saturday night in our environs...gangbanger A shoots up gangbanger B; B goes to emergency room for publicly funded $250,000 worth of surgery and post-op treatment by C, an MD, who otherwise would have been insulted and intimidated by A or B should he have met either earlier in the day. Indeed, C is more likely to be ridiculed or sued by B than thanked. And yet C does not need either A or B; both need the former in extremis
Where does this all end — these open borders, unsustainable entitlements and public union benefits and salaries, these revolving door prisons and Al Gore-like energy fantasies?
He then goes on to make a fascinating connection between the parasitism of the petty criminals and the parasitic ideology of the progressive left. Just as the criminals don't really want equal opportunity, but just to get "stuff" without laboring for it, so too are the professional malcontents among the progressive Democrats not really interested in "social justice", the "green agenda", or any of the other connivances and talking points the usual suspects blather about; such talk is merely carefully scripted lines meant to be delivered as part of a stirring performance meant to elicit an emotional, and not rational, response on the part of folks who, by-and-large, are too lazy to think matters through themselves. I mean, why waste time gathering information and reasoning one's way to the heart of a matter when you can have your outrage du jour provided in a convenient soundbite; so you can get back to watching American Idol instead. But VDH sums it up better than I ever could:
Watching the tastes, the behavior, the rhetoric, the appointments, and the policy of this administration suggests to me that it is not really serious in radically altering the existing order, which it counts on despite itself. Its real goal is a sort of parasitism that assumes the survivability of the enfeebled host.
That does not mean it has not done a lot of damage and will not do even more in the next two years; only that it never quite wanted to see cap and trade legislation enacted, blanket amnesty, Guantamo shut down, or Predators ended; these were simply crude slurs by which to demonize Bush, ways of acquiring power and influence, but not a workable plan of living. Note that Obama is now zealous on just those issues which he could have easily rammed through his Democratically controlled congress in 2009-10 when he had large majorities, such as amnesty and cap and trade.
You cannot fly to Costa del Sol on solar panels. The light switches might not go on at Vail without coal burning somewhere. The Holder or Obama children might not be safe in the Stockton or Parlier city schools. Some right-wing nut in the Dakotas is still necessary to pump the oil to refine the gas for Air Force One; there is no golf without an irrigation system and a supply of either ground or surface water.
In short, the currently insulted class is necessary and Obama knows it.
These are only some of the more choice excepts. As I often say, make sure you read the whole thing. As with most of Hanson's essays, you'll be glad you did.
How can you tell it’s the first day of summer?

Well, by the calendar, of course, and all of the usual hallmarks; like snow in Colorado?!?
The calendar says summer starts tomorrow in the Northern Hemisphere. The snow falling in the mountains of Colorado tells a different story.
A storm that has prompted a tornado watch across Nebraska and Kansas today also left 2 to 4 inches of snow in the Rocky Mountains, said Joe Ramey, a weather service meteorologist in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Ramey said the snow won’t mean ski slopes will be able to reopen. The snow is in patches, he said.
He also said we could all point fingers at La Nina, you know, if we h8terz and needed to assign blame. I knew Coloradans should have heeded Tom Tancredo's warning about illegal immigrants :)
Seriously though, when I think of summertime I think of bucolic images like wheat rippling in a gentle warm breeze, afternoons spent in outdoor pursuits like baseball or softball, or halcyon memories of the seaside as a youth. But none of my memories of summer here in the US ever included snow. Of course, that could be a function of my provincialism...
You realize, of course, that this phenomenon is all due to global warming. Or, you know, alternatively you can fall back on the old standby of blaming Bush.

But don't any of you h8ting wingnutz curse La Nina, because that would be, well, you know...
RIP Patty Ann [UPDATE: Funeral Arrangements, &ct]
UPDATE: Ace has the details about the funeral arrangements and memorial donations. [Clarification: Andy at AoSHQ]
As Dan reminded me yesterday in the thread asking for prayers for BJ Texeira, Patty Ann, a member of "The Hostages" family and longtime doyenne of the internet, was herself still struggling with a life threatening surgical complication and in dire need of our prayers as well.
Alas, I heard this morning that she passed away during the night. As far as I know, in her last moments she was awake and being comforted by a friend who read her the 23rd psalm. She has gone to be with the Lord, His will be done...
Pray for the loved ones she leaves here on Earth. May God grant them His mercy, strength, comfort, and peace in their time of grief. And may He reassure them that in the fullness of time, they too will join Him and their beloved Patty Ann in Your kingdom, where all will be together forever.
Patty Ann was a lovely woman who was always witty, cheerful, and kind. And she will surely be missed. I can't help but get the feeling that, if at all possible, heaven will be a little brighter today because she's joined it's ranks.
Godspeed Patty Ann.
Dan's comment:
Our pal BJTex and his family urgently need your prayers.
An internet friend of many here at POWIP, and occasional contributor, B.J. Texeira has suffered a serious setback in his life; he's had a recurrence of the glioblastoma he had removed last fall. Indeed, he's undergoing surgery today at the University of Pennsylvania.
His doctors are confident that they'll be able to remove the new growth without harming B.J.'s surrounding brain tissue. Our Pal Danger Dave spoke to him on the telephone, and reports that he's confident and in overall good spirits. BJ has promised to let us know the outcome of today's surgery ASAP.
Until then, I'd ask that all of you who are so inclined please remember Brian and his family in your prayers. I'll start:
Loving Father,
Please watch over, protect, and have mercy on Your son Brian. Heal him Lord, either by Your hand directly, or through the graces You provide to his caregivers. Also grace his family with all of the strength, courage, and reassurances they need in this time of trial. We trust in Your loving kindness and mercy, ask that Your will be done, and that we may play the role You created each of us for.
In Jesus name.
Some SchadenFriday™ considerations

Dan, and friends of POWIP around the interwebz, have done a stand-up job this past week keeping up with all of the developments in "Weiner-gate" as they've, ahem, popped up. I really don't have anything of substance to add, save for linking this story out today that points to an interesting evolution in the narrative:
"Weinergate" has put a Seattle college cutie through the wringer -- jeopardizing her academic dreams, embarrassing her family and shattering her privacy.
"I'm just collateral damage," Gennette Cordova, 21, lamented in explaining how her world was turned upside-down when she wound up on the receiving end of a lewd, underwear-clad crotch shot sent from Rep. Anthony Weiner's Twitter account.
"I just want this to be over," she told The Post yesterday during an exclusive photo shoot and interview near her Bellingham, Wash., college campus.
Cordova thinks the package-hugging picture -- which Weiner "can't say with certitude" isn't his -- was meant for somebody else and landed in her Twitter account by mistake.
Until recently, the congressman also followed stripper and porn actress Ginger Lee, 28, who openly gushes about her "Mr. Sexy Congressman" on social-network sites.
"Her name is Ginger -- it makes sense he might have mixed us up," Cordova said, noting that two of the first three letters of their names are the same.
Maybe Ms. Cordova is on to something; perhaps she has unwittingly answered a lot of questions regarding timing, motive, etc. Who can really be sure. But this tidbit may extend the life of the story for a few more delicious days at least. Or should I more aptly say, Extenze™ ...
[UPDATE]: Dude! ACE is blowing this wide open with a barn-burner regarding the very same Ms. Ginger Lee that Ms. Cordova referred to. Seems that he has links to evidence that Ginger was accustomed to Twitter direct messages from Congressman Weiner, and also rather, how shall I say, friendly in her demeanor...
Oh, and speaking of tools, John Edwards? Dan already got to that as well, so 'nuff said...
Also today comes the news of the passing of Jack Kevorkian, the infamous Dr. of Death, at 83. Many adjectives have been used to describe the assisted suicide advocate, but it's interesting to note the details of his own passing:
His attorney, Mayer Morganroth, said it appears Kevorkian suffered a pulmonary thrombosis when a blood clot from his leg broke free and lodged in his heart. With Kevorkian was his niece Ava Janus and Morganroth.
“It was peaceful, he didn’t feel a thing,” Morganroth said.
Well, at least not yet...How ironic, that a man who helped others end their lives prematurely, in the opinion of many, chose to live out his own completely. For his sake, I pray that he made his piece with God before the end. Our pal Jeff Goldstein at Protein Wisdom captured that thought in a whimsical post that ponders possible choices for his last words:
“This Jesus guy. He’s supposed to be, like, totally forgiving, right?”
Indeed He is Dr. I hope that you contritely asked for some of His boundless mercy in the end, otherwise, you got spme 'splainin' to do...
And finally, perhaps the most Shaden-filled, is a story from the UK's Daily Mail with a new detail regarding the death of Osama bin Laden:
Was Osama bin Laden shot with a bullet soaked in pork fat, denying him a place in paradise?
Yes, if one rather shady website, that peddles gun oil containing liquefied pig fat, is to be believed.
The makers of Silver Bullet Gun Oil claim it contains 13 per cent USDA liquefied pig fat thus making the product 'a highly effective counter-Islamic terrorist force multiplier.'
The website also notes its customers include members of the U.S. military.
Now far be it from me to be so culturally insensitive to suggest that this product is knowingly used for the reasons alluded to by the manufacturer, but, I mean, it does tickle the little grey cells, non? And just for the record, I personally don't think ObL is hanging with 72 virgins celebrating his jihadi exploits versus the infidels. Hanging? Maybe...
Let's just say I'm thinking it might be a little hot where he is, if you know what I mean ;)
So there you have it. Thoughts? Impressions? Quips? Have at it.
As a final note I'd just like to say that there are real persons associated with each of these stories, families, friends, those unintentionally involved. It is my sincere hope that any suffering they're experiencing end immediately, or as soon as possible. And I also am truly praying that both Jack Kevorkian and Osama bin Laden made their peace with the Lord before exiting our realm of existence and moving on to the next; to not have would portend an unbearable fate. I also pray that Mr. Weiner see the error of his ways, embrace the truth, and make amends for this entire episode.

Memorial Day, 2011

An excuse for most to enjoy an extra day off of work. For many, a reason to get together with friends and family a share a pleasant afternoon " grillin' and chillin' ". And to others who are blessed to live at or near the seashore, as I do, it marks the official beginning of summertime...
These are all wonderful pursuits, and it's my wish that everyone enjoy the day to the utmost.
But I also would ask that we all take a moment to consider what the motivation for this holiday really is; a day to remember the men and women who have paid the ultimate price to safeguard and preserve our freedoms here at home. Few said it as well as President Reagan in 1982; I recommend you take a moment to read the short passage.
And, as honored, and flattered, as I am when folks offer me their regards and thanks for service on this day, I confess that I also have to take a moment to politely clarify that Memorial day is not intended to honor me, a humble use-ta-be; that's the motivation behind Veterans day...
No indeed, it's to honor what every use-ta-be will tell you are the real heroes; the warriors they served with who left it all on the battlefield; who gave the fullest measure of devotion when duty called and their nation needed them. To those who gave all of their tomorrows, to ensure that we could enjoy ours.

So in the course of today's festivities, I ask that you take a moment to remember them all; to perhaps drink a toast in their memory.
And if you're so inclined to pray, join me now:
Father in heaven, we pray that You pull close to you the souls of all who have sacrificed themselves in order to protect us all here at home. We thank You for seeding such people amongst us; for gracing ordinary folk the extraordinary courage, strength, poise, and resolve to do so in the moment when it is absolutely necessary. And we thank You for gracing their surviving loved ones with all they need to carry on with their lives.
And, Dear God, please continue to watch over the young men and women who are far from home, at the tip of the spear, on this day. God bless them and keep them. Keep Your face turned toward them. Protect them with Your strong right hand; let no weapon formed against them prosper. Father we pray that when their individual tours of duty are done that they can come home to live and prosper amidst the love of their families and friends for many years to come.
And that in Your time, there will be an end to war for us all. In Jesus' name...
Happy Memorial day to all. May God bless you all, and may He continue to bless the United States of America.
