The needs of Obama outweigh the need for the truth!

Like many I'm sure, you may have watched some of the coverage surrounding the Fort Hood shooter, Major Hasan, and marveled at the apparent need of the legacy media and some blogs to find any motivation for that shooting other than what has become known about his zealous committment to Islamic extremist points of view.  In spite of the emerging facts about Hasan's past, his disturbing behavior, and his association with suspicious individuals, the media has instead done it's best to make him out to be a victim of sorts. We've heard about him suffering insults, ridicule, and derision, without being provided the proper "context"; that this happened after he became a vocal apologist for jihadist acts, outspoken against American foreign policy, and the actions his army brethren in pursuing that policy.  We've also been shown interviews with hand-wringing psychologists who assert that Hassan contracted a form of post traumatic stress disorder, even though he had yet to deploy to a war zone, simply through listening to the experiences of the soldiers he counseled-as if it were like being adversley affected by second-hand-smoke.  This risible notion of some form of derivitive affectation set my mind awhirl wondering why the liberal media outlets would go out of their way trying to attribute Hasan's actions to anything but the Jihadist mindset he had adopted.

And then it occurred to me why they had to find some reason, any reason, other than Hasan's decision to be a jihadi.  If the liberal media were to acquiesce and report the facts-that he was enamoured of the teachings of radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, that he was described by other Muslims as being a "radical fundamentalist", and that the FBI knew that Hasan had tried to contact Al Queda-then the public might rightly begin to associate his acts as being jihadist, or the acts of an Islamic extremist; in other words an act of terrorism.  And that is an admission they are loathe to make, because of the possible repercussions.

Should the headlines and ledes broadcast the fact that Hasan was a jihadist and therefore his rampage in effect a terrorist act, such a shocking revelation would surely cement itself into the minds of even low information voters.  And, naturally questions would arise in individual psyches, at dinner tables, in barrooms, at cocktail parties, and all across the nation: why was this allowed to happen?  How is it that the FBI knew of it for 6 months, and didn't act?  And perhaps the question most feared in the White House, and the Congressional halls of power; "How come incidents like this never happened when Bush was President"?

During the campaign we, as a nation, were told to ignore Obama's inexperience and instead concentrate on his Brilliance!, Judgement!, and the way that the rest of the world would instantly love America once that reckless cowboy, the certifiable dolt Chimperor McBusHitlerBurton had vacated the White House; that when Americans were reminded of the fact that Mr. Bush had kept the country safe from terror attack since 9/11, an astonishing and herculean feat in and of itself, that those eeeeeevvvolll Rethugs! were simply playing the fear card, that it was no real accomplishment, and in fact the nation had nothing to fear from the Islamists who didn't pose any real threat to our country !

If the media told the truth about Hasan's motivations and the nature of his killing spree, as well as that act's acclaim by his revered cleric, then not only would the lie be put to many of the assertions made during the campaign, but a huge majority of independant voters might forever come to associate Obama and the Democrats as being unacceptably soft on national security-an potentially toxic label in post 9/11 America.  Add to that the public's dissatisfaction with the economy, Obamacare, his handling of Afghanistan, and what may eventually be a nuclear Iran and it all adds up to a possible electoral armageddon for the Democrats and Obama; both in 2010, 2012, and maybe beyond.

"From each according to their ability, to each according to their need", is a quote by Karl Marx that I'm sure, in varying degrees, is secretly popular amongst many of the members of the legacy media, nutroot blogs, and White House denizens.  Right now, Obama desperately needs this episode to not be seen as a terrorist attack in the eyes of the public, and the media has the ability to make that happen-or so they think.  Unless Senator Lieberman's hearing can command the attention necessary to get the real story out, the needs of the public for the truth may just be sacrificed to serve the electoral need of Mr. Obama and the Democrats.

Must be more of that new kind of politics...But is that the Change! America voted for?  Is it Change! we can believe in..?

UPDATE: Darleen at Protein Wisdom weighs in on the media's willful disregard for the facts in their lame attempts to spin the Fort Hood shootings in any direction but towards the truth.

Herbert & Cohen; off message, or off the reservation?

As mentioned in prior posts, some of the liberal intelligentsia of the fourth estate have lately been experiencing epiphanies, and in those moments of clarity are seeing Obama as he really is.  Instead of the demi-god ushering in a whole new era of hope-n-change, some are beginning to see him more as an inexperienced demagogue who is perhaps in over his head in regards to foreign relations and policy, and who’s lack of leadership has led to a derailing of his promised, ambitious, domestic social agenda.

Today the disgruntled liberals in the spotlight are Bob Herbert of the NY Times, and in his second appearance, Richard Cohen of the Washington Post.  Bob Herbert, who up until now has never penned a story about the President that cast him in an unfavorable light, is concerned that Obama doesn’t feel the pain of the unemployed nor an urgency to create government funded programs to employ them:

The big question on the domestic front right now is whether President Obama understands the gravity of the employment crisis facing the country. Does he get it? The signals coming out of the White House have not been encouraging.
[snip]
We seem to be waiting for some mythical rebound to come rolling in, magically equipped with robust job creation, a long-term bull market and paradise regained for consumers.

It ain’t happening.

I get that Bob Herbert is feeling people’s pain, but my intuition makes me suspect that he’s concerned as much, if not more, about the electoral prospects of the Democrats in 2010 should unemployment remain high, as he is about the unemployed themselves.

Richard Cohen is also having doubts about Obama, this time around it's about his inexperience and how that affects foreign policy.  And, in not so many words, he wonders aloud whether the President is perceived as weak:

This is the president we now have: He inspires lots of affection but not a lot of awe. It is the latter, though, that matters most in international affairs, where the greatest and most gut-wrenching tests await Obama. If he remains consistent to his rhetoric of just seven weeks ago, he will send more troops to Afghanistan and more of them will die. "This is not a war of choice," he said. "This is a war of necessity. Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al-Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans."

[emphasis-ed.]

George Will, while hardly a liberal, also weighs in on the first couple’s self-centeredness as well as Obama’s certainty that the very power of the wisdom flowing forth from his lips is enough to sway any audience, solve any dispute, and correct any problems; and more realistically, the folly of that belief:

Both Obamas gave heartfelt speeches about . . . themselves. Although the working of the committee's mind is murky, it could reasonably have rejected Chicago's bid for the 2016 Games on aesthetic grounds -- unless narcissism has suddenly become an Olympic sport.

In the 41 sentences of her remarks, Michelle Obama used some form of the personal pronouns "I" or "me" 44 times. Her husband was, comparatively, a shrinking violet, using those pronouns only 26 times in 48 sentences. Still, 70 times in 89 sentences conveyed the message that somehow their fascinating selves were what made, or should have made, Chicago's case compelling.
[snip]
It was gallant of the president to say to the Olympic committee that Michelle is "a pretty big selling point for the city." Gallant, but obviously untrue. And -- this is where we pass from the merely silly to the ominous -- suppose the president was being not gallant but sincere. Perhaps the premise of the otherwise inexplicable trip to Denmark was that there is no difficulty, foreign or domestic, that cannot be melted by the sunshine of the Obama persona. But in the contest between the world and any president's charm, bet on the world.

Notwithstanding Will’s snarkiness, he is most likely correct.  But there will be some folks who read these words that feel he’s just another right-wing hater;  I direct them to these postings by Ace in which he not only refutes the assertions nicely, but also flames a few of those wringing their hands in concern over such a pronounced and unpatriotic lack of civility.  So in keeping with one of the President’s favorite memes, let's consider such crying and gnashing of teeth to be mere distractions; more of the corrosive “old kind of politics” that have gone the way of the dinosaur in the age of Obama.

Still, there are many in the legacy media who remain ardent supporters of the President, such as those leveling the accusations of Republican sedition vis-à-vis the 2016 Olympic bid.  One of the higher visibility examples, in exposure only and certainly not gravitas, is part-time economist and full-time shill Paul Krugman, also of the NY Times.  His latest column, “The Politics of Spite”, an exposition on the Copenhagen catastrophe, is such an archetype of partisan high dudgeon that it should be included in a poli-sci style manual.  I’ll spare you direct quotations from the smarmy diatribe, but instead will point you to Bookworm’s post where she employs a plethora of evidence from Krugman’s own past columns  which exhibit the same behavior that he decries today; and in doing so proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that his picture should accompany the dictionary entry for “hypocrite”.

Smart Power! results may not be the same as implied or expected

During the 2008campaign, Obama promised to meet with the leaders of Iran and North Korea, "without preconditions".  And while much has been made about that promise, it seems that he forgot to tell the American people that he would also be happy to meet with them  without expecting any real results either !  I guess the moving goalpost disclaimer was in the fine print...

According to Tony Romm at "The Hill":

President Barack Obama first issued the tough two-week deadline in a speech following Thursday's meetings between Iran and the P5+1, a coalition of British, Chinese, French, German, Russian and U.S. officials. At the time, Obama reiterated the U.S. approach to Iran's nuclear program would be tough — especially so, he added, if Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad failed to provide nuclear inspectors "unfettered access" to its uranium facilities.
...
But Kelly on Friday seemed to downplay any diplomatic expectations. He stressed during his briefing that the Obama administration would not commit to a response or punishment, much less a deadline, until it could coordinate with the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA).

"I don't know that it's written in stone, necessarily," Kelly repeated about the deadline. "But I think we'll find out more details when — after [IAEA head Mohamed] ElBaradei's trip."

[emphasis-ed.]

That would be the same Mohammed El-Baradei that, you know, conveniently left out of the IAEA reports the part concerning Iran's work on nuclear weapons; the same El-Baradei that considers himself a world peacemaker that's doing God's work!  This is the guy the administration is going to rely on to "coordinate the details" of the Qum inspection schedule and regimen?  This is the kind of Smart Power ! that's guiding our nation's most urgent and sensitive foreign policy actions; yet another example of the President's Brilliance! and Judgement! perhaps?

It's been observed by some of his opponents that all of Obama's promises have an expiration date, but a few months ago nobody would have believed that the time period would become this short!  And I guess it's safe to say that his proclamation that, "a nuclear Iran is unacceptable", has expired too; after all, they're just words ...

Israelis? Get your things together,’cuz the bus is coming

Former US ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, rightly RIPS Obama on his UN speech. From "The Corner" at NRO:

“It was a very naïve, Wilsonian speech, and very revealing of Obama’s foreign policy,” says Bolton. “Overall, it was so apologetic for the actions of prior administrations, in an effort to distance Obama from them, that it became yet another symbol of American weakness in the wake of the president’s decision to abandon missile sites in Poland and the Czech Republic, and his recent manifest hesitation over what to do in Afghanistan.”

Weasel Zippers provides a video of Bolton being interviewed on FOX by Megan Kelly, during which he says of the President, "He put Israel on the chopping block"...

i wonder if there's any new cases of buyers remorse in Manhattan today?

UPDATE: Bolton isn't the only one dissatisfied with Obama's performance to date.  A quote from a time magazine interview published today:

What's your take on President Obama thus far?
Weak. Waffling, wavering, ambiguous and overwhelmingly concessionary.

Spoken by the obviously racist, h8ting, bastion of wingnuttia...Ralph Nader ?!?

UPDATE II: Perhaps the title of the director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation, Nile Gardiner's, essay title says it all; "The UN loves Barack Obama because he is weak".

He is the first American president who has made an art form out of apologizing for the United States, which he has done on numerous occasions on foreign soil, from Strasbourg to Cairo. The Obama mantra appears to be – ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do to atone for your country. This is a message that goes down very well in a world that is still seething with anti-Americanism contempt.
...
Simply put, Barack Obama is loved at the UN because he largely fails to advance real American leadership. This is a dangerous strategy of decline that will weaken US power and make her far more vulnerable to attack.

Do yourself a favor and read the whole thing...

UPDATE III: Thanks to Nice Deb for the link in her roundup of these revoltin' developments.

Something tells me that from here on out the road is going to get mighty tough to hoe for Mr. Obama...

So how is that smart power working out for us?

Well when it rains it pours…

As a result of President Obama’s world apology tour, we’re perhaps beginning to see the results of his smart power.  Not only have our long-time allies, the Israelis, seem to have decided that they need to look out for themselves since we apparently are throwing them under the bus, but progress has been made regarding the prospects of unprecedented unilateral talks with some of the world’s rogue nations. North Korea has invited the Obama administration to join in direct talks on the status of their various military and civilian nuclear programs.  And even though it has come to light that the IAEA willfully hid evidence of a covert Iranian military nuclear program, the administration has indicated it will also soon begin talks with the illegitimate Iranian thugocracy, without preconditions of course.  That is, except for the fig leaf that they “might” be willing to put their military nuclear program on the negotiating table as well; a prospect seen as a hollow gesture that gives western leaders a pretty piece of paper to wave while they declare that we will now have peace in our time…

Also disturbing is the revelation that Obama knew in advance about the release of the Lockerbie bomber by the UK.  And our closest ally has also sent their SAS to train Gaddafi’s soldiers; a development that most likely will lead to no good at some point down the road.

But the pièce de résistance may be the most recent announcement of Chavez and Putin working together for a nuclear Venezuela!  Add to this the Russian bombers stationed there, and the increasing visits by the Russian navy, and the result is a disturbing scenario emerging centered on a Dictator who has voiced his wished to be a regional strongman.  How can the President allow these escalations to occur, and will they ultimately lead to a “Cuban Missile Crisis” type of scenario for Mr. Obama or his successor?

Only time will tell, but it seems that “smart” power doesn’t impress our adversaries as much as “strong” power did.  But then, Joey B. did say that Obama would be tested…

Let’s hope he does well.  But still, “Gird your loins” as Slo Joe said, because all we have is hope since the most Honest!, Ethical!, Transparent! President EVAH! never felt the need to do as, you know,  all of his predecessors of the last 50 years or so have done and release, among other details of his life history,  his college grades!

 I guess he’s special…
