House Democrats: A tale of two mendacities.
Today we bring you a double-your-pleasure example of the mendacity of the House Democrats. The first is an outgrowth of last week's election of Bill Owens in NY-23. He ran on a platform of being opposed to the public option, medicare reduction, taxing health care benefits as well as any increases in middle-class taxes whatsoever. But once sworn in, Surprise!, he flip flopped on all of these positions in what has to be a record even for politicians:
Owens indicated in a press release released shortly afterwards that he was now in favor of the the "Affordable Healthcare for America Act" bill in direct contrast to his earlier position during the election campaign.
According to Politico.com, Mr. Owens assured voters that he felt the public option had no place in the health care reform bill. Contrary to that position, Mr. Owens now indicates that he intends to vote in favor of the bill even though it now contains a public option.
Mr. Owens also indicated during his campaign that he was firmly opposed to cutting Medicare benefits, taxing health care benefits, and increased taxes on the middle class in any way as you can see clearly in the screenshot below, taken directly from Mr. Owens' campaign website.

The House Health reform bill contains sections that cut Medicare benefits, tax existing health care benefits, and increases taxes on the middle class, yet Mr. Owens stated today that he will now vote in favor of those things contrary to what he had promised the voters of NY's 23rd Congressional District that he would vote against.
Which brings us to the second high level example. Implying that the Stupak amendment to the house health care bill was merely a necessary political connivance, Representative Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.) says she expects that language to be stripped from any final bill constructed by the conference committee:
“I am confident that when it comes back from the conference committee that that language won't be there,†Wasserman Schultz said during an appearance on MSNBC. “And I think we're all going to be working very hard, particularly the pro-choice members, to make sure that's the case.â€
The amendment, offered by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), won the support of Republicans and dozens of centrist Democrats in the House, but revealed a deep divide in the Democratic caucus over abortion.
It’s not clear how the abortion debate could impact a final vote in the House on the healthcare bill, but it could be difficult for many of the centrists who supported Stupak’s amendment to vote for a healthcare bill that did not include his language.
See Cap'n Ed's post on this matter for a more complete discussion of the vote on Saturday night, and why in his opinion it was the right thing to do for the Republican caucus to avoid the temptation to resort to parlaimentary shenanigans and put the house Democrats on the spot by voting "present" on the Stupak amendment; asserting that by maintaing their integrity on the issue, it almost compells house Democrats to vote against a final bill from which Stupak's measure is stripped.
So it seems that the Republicans are not the only party having ideological internecine struggles. made worse still by MoveOn.org's declaration of intent to use 3.6 million dollars recently raised to unseat any Democrat who doesn't fall in line and vote for Obamacare-as directed !
The Chicago way: Bribe seniors with $250 to pass Obamacare.
When all else fails go with the tried and true. So it is with President Obama who today called on Congress to pass a 13 billion dollar measure that would send 50 million senior citizens 250 dollars each. Considering that seniors have been among the most vocal opponents of Obama's health care initiative, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this money is meant as a nuanced Incentive !, for them to back off of their representatives long enough for Obamacare to become law. I guess they're counting on seniors to, you know, vote in their economic interest !
But I have to wonder, with all of the accumulated wisdom of their time here on Earth, how many seniors will consider the one-time $250 payment to be fair recompense for all of the medical care they won't be getting in the future considering the rationing of services as well as the complete life ideology that is inherently baked into the goods...
That said, there is a quote often attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville; "The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money." But, that is actually a variant of Alexander Francis Tytler misattributed to de Tocqueville:
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy
[emphasis-ed.]
There are many folks in modern America that will testify to the lax fiscal policy of the last 20 years, and the unbounded fiscal policy of Obama. His redistributionist policies seem to reach for the scenario outlined in Tytler's maxim, ensuring that a majority will permanently vote for the party promising the most largesse-in other words the Democrats. Still others will characterize his ideology as a tact to achieving the greater result of replacing our representative democracy with one of the other options Tytler mentions; and regardless of the benevolence, in the final analysis a tyrant is always just that-a tyrant...
Nobel committee: Hey, let’s immanetize this eschaton!

Little noticed on a day when Obama was awarded the Nobel peace prize was a story about some who think he is more eminent than even that honor could demonstrate. The AP reported yesterday that there is a sense among some of the African Bishops attending a meeting at the Vatican that the hand of the Almighty was involved in Mr. Obama’s election:
African bishops attending a Vatican meeting are speaking about the election of Barack Obama in divine terms—putting them very much at odds with many of their U.S. counterparts.
Archbishop Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle of Accra, Ghana said Wednesday that there was "a divine plan behind" Obama's election.
"It's like the biblical story repeating itself," he told reporters, citing the Old Testament figure Joseph, who after being sold into slavery in Egypt ends up becoming a top official.
If the intuition of these Clerics is correct, would that make the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops a den of heretics for opposing Obama’s health care program on the basis of it’s funding for abortion as well as the prospect of rationing? I must note that not all Catholics oppose Obamacare, like the liberal organization Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good. In fact, I have the ignominious pleasure of having the Bishop of my own diocese, Bishop William Murphy, chairman of Domestic Justice and Human Development for the U.S. bishops, as one that weights the social justice aspect of Obamacare above the overarching concerns of the USCCB:
Bishop Murphy of Rockville Centre, N.Y., noted that the “we strongly oppose inclusion of abortion as part of a national health care benefit.†But he emphasized the priority the church placed on coverage for the poor, calling health care “not a privilege but a right.â€
“Health care is not just another issue for the Church or for a healthy society,†he wrote. “It is a fundamental issue of human life and dignity.â€
So what should I expect living on Long Island? It’s easy to see the difference between the position of the Church as a whole, and the outlook of some of the senior Clergy that reconcile sacrificing a fundamental tenet of the faith in the name of social justice. This is part of the mindset that leads some American Catholics to entertain the notion of a schism with Rome, especially among those who more heavily weight social justice concerns as professed in liberation theology; since the same liberation theology that some schismatics flirt with was declared a heresy by John Paul II-a position researched and validated by Benedict XVI, then Cardinal Ratzinger.
John Paul II disagreed. To make the church into a secular political institution and to see salvation solely as the achievement of social justice was to rob faith in Jesus of its power to transform every life. The image of Jesus as a political revolutionary was inconsistent with the Bible and the Church's teachings.
He didn't mean that the Church was not going to be the voice of the oppressed, was not going to champion the poor. But it should not do it by partisan politics, or by revolutionary violence. The Church's business was bringing about the Kingdom of God, not about creating a Marxist utopia.
[emphasis-ed.]
On a more secular level I tend to agree with Thomas Sowell:
After political crusades for "affordable housing" ended up ruining the housing market and much of the economy with it, many of the same politicians are now carrying on a crusade for "affordable health care." But what you can afford has absolutely nothing to do with the cost of producing anything. Refusing to pay those costs means that you are just not going to continue getting the same quantity and quality — regardless of what any politician says or how well he says it.
Where is the justice in the degradation of our health care system for the 85% of the public that is happy with their healthcare? And, as a Catholic, why are leaders of the church advocating for such a system, especially when it violates our fundamental belief in a culture of life? Whatever happened to “rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar’sâ€â€¦ etc? It seems to me that these leaders aren’t rendering unto God that which is God’s. And that is certainly a violation of their vows and beliefs; whether Obama is a beneficiary of divine provenance or not.
But, beyond domestic political considerations and questions of a coming schism, this talk of Obama’s ersatz divinity, or divine installation, coupled with the rising tensions, both nuclear and conventional, in the middle east is certain to make students of the Biblical book of Revelation perk up their ears; and ponder whether the action of the Nobel Prize committee was also divinely guided to assist the great pretender in his masquerade as the man who would bring about peace on Earth. Or, are they wishfully heralding the coming workers paradise on Earth; utopia in the “age of Obamaâ€. Exactly which eschaton are they immanetizing?
Based on Mark 13:32, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Fatherâ€, so I tend to lean toward the secular implication; because too many people are on to the "Obama as divinity" shtick. But you never know, I’ve been wrong before…
A two-fer; Democrats display their hypocrisy and psychosis of projection
There’s been a lot of faux outrage in Democrat circles about how the “tea-baggers†and town hall health care opponents are, in reality, professionally organized mobs who are only intent on “shouting down†the opposition. Like many, I am amused at the irony of the party that invented “shouting downâ€, and who so effectively used flash mobs of brown-shirt astroturfers in the 2008 Presidential campaign, whining like spoiled children when their legislative agenda is thwarted by actual “grassroots†groups of ordinary concerned citizens; as well as when they project their own usual methodology and tactics onto that same agitated opposition.
It kind of reminds me of the phony self-righteousness of the MSM; holding conservatives to a higher standard than liberals because of the hypocrisy. I guess that in a universe where there were actually objective mainstream news sources, videos like these posted by Cap’n Ed, from Arizona and Illinois, would receive a lot of play because they expose the usual rank hypocrisy of the Democrat’s public assertions regarding any and all opponent; and after all, that’s what the MSM is concerned about exposing, eh?
Not.So.Much…
No, to actually report on these kind of episodes would disrupt the meta-narrative that the MSM is trying to craft for Obamacare. And, it might have the horrible unintended consequence of legitimizing the protesters and their grievances. We can’t have that! Not when dedicated journalists shills like Chris “Tingle†Matthews, Keith Olbermann, and Eugene Robinson are doing their duty!, trying to ensure that the Obama Presidency is successful.
But, unfortunately for people of their ilk, a large portion of the public is focused on this debate, and get word of mouth and talk radio reports of this kind of chicanery. And so ultimately this might just be a win-win for conservatives. Not only might Obamacare be defeated, but so too might the reality of the bias and duplicity of the media be substantially impressed in the public consciousness in such a way that their propaganda will have far less impact in the future.
I mean, we can all see how well it’s working. Just look at Obama’s soaring approval ratings!
Â
UPDATE: Ooops! Spoke too soon. Make that a trifecta. It seems that suddenly the MSM feels that a candidates college writings are vitally important !1!1!!eleventy. Well at least when that candidate is, you know, a large state Republican in a tight race!
The “stretch run” for Obama’s health care plan
The passing of Ted Kennedy seems to have given the Democrats new resolve to pass Obamacare. And generally, they are trying to be careful not to overtly try to capitalize off of his death. Still, I believe that many people will see through the obviously adult scripted remarks given Teddy’s grandson to read at the funeral eulogy as being another contrived episode like the unusually erudite 11 year old girl’s question to Obama at one of his health care town hall meetings.
Â
While subtlety is the order of the day for some on the left, others are allowing the mask to slip a bit. Like Senate majority leader Reid, who told interviewers that he believed Kennedy’s death would help them pass the health care legislation. Still others, like former Vice President Al Gore, are appealing to morality; citing Matthews Gospel and declaring, “The country has a moral duty to pass health care reform-This Year!â€. For his part, former President Clinton, like many other Democrats, is trying to rally the party faithful and downplaying the furor of the people at town hall fora during August;
“You need to back these congressmen and let them know you’re not going to let them be steamrollered by a bunch of people who have been frightened,†Clinton said, in reference to the town hall tumult of the last few weeks. “Don’t let anybody tell you that President Obama wants to ration health care. We are rationing health care in America.â€
People who’ve been frightened? Shouldn’t he instead speak of people who’ve actually learned what is in the bill, what it will ultimately cost in dollars as well as in quality of American health care? It’s fascinating to watch the masters of fear-mongering, who regularly accused Republicans of plotting to cut medicare, and who are planning to do so themselves, intead accuse rank and file people across America with being scared into action, once again, by the Republicans.
What’s even more fascinating is the to-the-wall effort being expended; the usual, “by any means necessary†approach. The New York Times has put aside any pretense by calling for the “nuclear†option of simple majority vote in the Senate; an act of parlimentary prestidigitation that would reveal Obama’s post-partisan demagoguery as the palaver it really is. Still others are reaching for an old standby, the race card; such as Congresswoman Watson who insists that Obamacare opponents, “are trying to destroy the first President who looks like me!â€. But the most often employed measure, one that has worked most effectively in the past, is to have the Democrat’s allies in the MSM basically non-report on the contents of the actual legislation, scream breathlessly that the Republicans are not willing to play nice with Obama, and desperately hope that any actual reporting being done on the bill gets as little exposure as possible; like the fact’s uncovered by Freddoso and confirmed by the CRS that Obamacare will cover illegal immigrants!
But, all of this is just another number in what has become familiar Kabuki Theater. It’s not a question of, “ifâ€, the Democrats will try to capitalize off of Ted Kennedy’s death, but only “how†they will try to do so. The only real question that remains is what will they call it?  Obamacare, as has come into popular editorial usage, ChapiquiddiCare, as Ace likes to refer to it, or, maybe, KopechneCare…
UPDATE: Andrew Breitbart weighs in on what is hopefully the end of the MSM's cover for America's royalty.
